It all happened so fast.
Liv and Archie had just enough time to see the brick hurtling through the window and smacking Megan on the side of the head, knocking her off her chair and to the ground.
Archie instantly rushed to her aid. He felt for her head and when his hand came away, there was a smear of blood on it.
Liv looked out the window and heard the sound of footsteps retreating. âYou stay with herâand call an ambulance!â she commanded as she rushed out the door, shoving her way past people until she found a fire exit and watched as two hooded people ran down the sidewalk.
She gave chase, hoping that she could close the distance between them. She sprinted after them, running as fast as she could. She knew the route they would likely take would cut her off over the hill. Just next to the snow dome was a busy road. If they could get to that, theyâd be playing a game of dodging traffic.
Sure enough, they ran across the road, taking advantage of a break in the traffic. Olivia sprinted after them, car horns blaring as she narrowly avoided being hit. One car flashed by her so close that she could feel the rush of the wind whipping past her torso.
She ran down the hill and saw that the two men were beginning to separate. Shit. Iâm only going to get one.
One of them disappeared into the bushes, and she focused her efforts on the one heading down the pavement. He came to a gate that stalled him. He frantically tried to climb over it, but Liv was on him, grabbing him by the scruff of the neck and throwing him to the ground. She pulled down his hood to get a good look at his face.
He was a young man, possibly early twenties, with a ratty look to him. There were patches of stubble over his face, as though he were struggling to grow a beard.
âYou canât do that to me!â he shouted angrily. âThatâs fucking assault!â
âIâll be the judge of that,â she exclaimed, taking out handcuffs and fastening his hands behind his back. âYou do not have to say anything, but it may harm your defence if you do not mention when questioned something you later go on to rely on in court. Anything you do say may be given as evidence.â
She hauled the man to his feet and began to march him back towards the snow dome. Hopefully, Archie will have held the fort while I was away.
âI donât suppose you can save me a lot of trouble and tell me who your friend is?â she asked, anticipating the answer with a raised eyebrow.
âFuck you!â he spat out as he struggled futilely in the cuffs.
âFigured as much,â she retorted, waiting for the traffic to disperse at the busy intersection before she crossed the road. âYou know, you could save yourself a lot of trouble if you tell me who your friend is and why you have an issue with Philip Langan.
